7 Of The Most Common Rose Gardening Mistakes

Jan 25, 2021

The garden in your home is not only a place for relaxation, but also a colorful fragrant sea of flowers, among which the rose occupies the most royal place that rightfully belongs to it. Rose bushes with their indescribable beauty are a pride for every owner. But these adorable creatures do not always bloom well. On the contrary, sometimes they get sick and even wither. Many ask themselves what the reasons are. So, here are some of the most common mistakes that people make when growing roses.

1. Incorrect choice of planting site

To grow a healthy and abundantly flowering rose bush, you need to know where the plant will feel comfortable. Some factors should definitely not be ignored. In order to point out some of them, we will start with what roses really are:

  • Light-loving - light affects the height, number of flowers and their resistance to fungal diseases. The brighter they are, the better for them;
  • Thermophilic - insufficient heat slows down the accumulation of nutrients necessary for their normal development;
  • Do not like excessive moisture. The long stay of the roots in water leads to the destruction of the bush due to lack of oxygen. Furthermore, in winter, the wet soil cools strongly and the plant may freeze;
  • Prefer neutral soils. In them they more easily assimilate the nutrients located there;
  • They do not feel well under trees. If your rose grows in the shade of trees, do not expect it to bloom. Trees take away moisture and nutrients from your rose bush, and due to the shade the stems lengthen and become thin.

2. Improper planting of grafted roses

The place of replanting should be at a depth of 2 in. Only then the rose is properly planted. In fact, this is a very important detail that needs special attention. In sandy soil it is planted deeper, and in clay soil - shallower. And when planting a climbing rose, the place of replanting should be deeper - approximately 4 in deep.

3. Improper summer pruning

Summer pruning of roses is of vital importance If you want to enjoy their gorgeous blooms. Therefore, some requirements must be met:

  • Withered flowers should be removed. After they fall, nature makes the plant consider its work on flowering to be completed. It begins to bear fruit and prepare for winter. Still, we want the rose to bloom - so the flowers must be cut before they wither, which will stimulate the bush to form new flowers;
  • "Blind" shoots should not be left unattended. They do not give color, so they must be cut and thus activated for flowering.

4. Surface watering

Roses should not be short of water. When watered superficially, water penetrates only into the top layer of soil and moisture does not reach the roots. How to water our rose bush properly?

  • It will be a good start to dig a hole around the roots at a depth of approximately 5 in immediately before watering, in which the water should be poured continuously. After absorbing, the hole should be filled (not bad to mulch);
  • It is good during the active flowering to water the roses once every 7-10 days, and in dry hot weather - every 3-5 days. The one-time watering rate is up to 10-15 liters per bush, depending on the size. It is best to water in the evening when the weather is cooler;
  • In early autumn, watering is reduced. An exception is made only for those varieties that continue to actively bloom.

5. Improper fertilization

Inexperienced gardeners try to feed their favorite roses as much as possible during flowering and thus make a huge mistake. Why? Nutrition is not always good for the plant:

  • Fertilization with a complex fertilizer, including nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus in equal proportions should be applied in early spring. During flowering period, this can only harm the plant;
  • The last fertilization is done in mid-September;
  • During the flowering period it is advisable to stop any feeding.

6. Improper preparation of roses for the winter

When preparing roses for winter frosts, mistakes are made such as:

  • Autumn fertilization with nitrogen fertilizers - nitrogen provokes the growth of new shoots that will not be able to grow and will freeze in winter;
  • Leaves are left on the stems - they are carriers of pests and can become a hidden breeding ground for diseases;
  • Early winter - premature watering causes the plants to germinate, so cover the roses with the onset of permanent frosts;
  • Excessive pruning of shoots - this is best done in early spring, when it becomes clear which of them survived the winter.

7. You trust non-professional advisors
