To Do Checklist For Fall Gardens

Sep 26, 2022

As fall sets in, the days start to get shorter and the nights cooler. And winter is getting closer with each passing day. The time is coming when gardeners have to prepare their garden for the rainy autumn weather. Here are some tips on how to deal with this not-so-easy task!

Planting and Transplanting Work

Autumn is a very good time for transplanting, and due to frequent rains, the soil has enough moisture. The ground is still warm from summer and autumn, so the plants still have time to get used to their new place and form new roots.

In the fall, you can also plant new seeds without hesitation. This is your last chance to add some color to the garden before winter comes. For roses, for example, autumn - before the first frost - is the perfect time to plant.

Planting bulbs

Bulbs can also be planted in the fall so that their flowers can germinate at the right time in the spring and delight you with their bright colors. The correct position is essential so that the harbingers of spring can grow well and bloom. Most like fresh, moist soil in the spring, but in the summer, when it is their latency period, the soil can be dry and porous. Bulbs should be planted in the ground at a depth of between two and three times their height. The bulb seeder provides an easy way to make holes large and deep enough. Then place the bulbs in the ground with the tip up, cover them with soil from the drill and press down.

Pruning of perennial herbaceous plants and shrubs

When the bushes turn yellow or their stems start to bend to the ground or start to drop seeds, it's time to prune them. This is because now the plants suck their sap back to the roots. If you do not prune them, they may wither.

Shrubs can be pruned to about a quarter of their size. However, this can vary depending on the type of shrub. You can usually find more information on plant labels or from your local garden store.

Hedge trimming

Hedges should also be pruned for the last time in the fall to prevent rot if moisture builds up. Prune deciduous hedges as much as you can without making holes, as they will not grow in the winter and your hedge may look bare. You should also remove the leaves from the trees that have fallen on the hedge, as otherwise it will not get enough fresh air and sun and may rot.

Grass Areas (Lawns)

In winter, humidity, low temperatures and light sun can affect your lawn. That's why lawns need a little gentle care and "pampering" again before they get stuck in the cold. When the leaves fall in the fall, they should be cleaned regularly from the lawn. The leaves that you leave lying on the lawn will deprive it of light and will be responsible for increasing the dry, brown spots and the development of moss. Mow your lawn for the last time around the beginning of November. The grass should not be shorter than 3 inches, as longer grass benefits more from reduced sunlight during this period. This will ensure better resistance to weeds and moss.

The use of autumn fertilizer is recommended. Autumn fertilizers usually have a low nitrogen content and a high level of potassium. The increased amount of potassium makes the grass stronger and increases its resistance to frost. In autumn, you should not use traditional autumn fertilizers, as they contain a large amount of nitrogen and make the grass grow faster, which in turn makes it more susceptible to frost.

Of course, there are some other little things you need to do before the first frost:

  • Flowers, roses and other plants that are sensitive to frost should be covered with twigs or leaves or wrapped in nylons with bubbles or the like.
  • Dig summer bulbs, such as dahlias, out of the ground and store them in a ventilated box in the basement.
  • Bring potted plants inside or place them in a sheltered place.
  • Disconnect the pipes from the outside and empty the taps and irrigation devices to prevent water freezing damage.
  • Disconnect the pumps in the ponds and, if necessary, install a special anti-icing pump.

When winter comes, gardeners can relax and take a break from gardening. But beware: Soon it will be time to get back to work! Nevertheless, if you still want to enjoy the beauty and sweet aroma of fresh flowers, you can always order a fall flower arrangement from TodayFlowerDelivery to be delivered to your home.
